Custom Mouthguards

Mouthguards are coverings worn over teeth and often used to protect teeth from injury during sports or from teeth grinding. There are two types of mouth guards:

  • Athletic Mouthguards
  • Night Guards

A customized athletic mouthguard is an excellent investment in your health and safety and should be used by anyone – children and adults playing contact sports such as hockey, soccer, football, boxing, basketball and lacrosse or non-contact sports (such as skateboarding or mountain biking) that may pose a risk of injury to the mouth.

If you grind your teeth at night, we can create a special mouthguard called a night guard or bite splint to prevent tooth damage. We can determine if you are grinding your teeth at night during your exam.

Multiple research studies, including studies by the American Dental Association, have shown a reduction in oral-facial injuries with the use of a properly fitted mouth guard. The National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) and the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) has also implemented the “mouthguard rule.” Prior to implementation, “… an athlete participating in contact sports had a better than 50% chance of sustaining a significant oral-facial injury during his or her secondary school career.”

Whether you need an athletic mouthguard or a night guard, a custom fit mouthguard offers you the best fit and most protection. The process is simple: we will take an impression of your teeth and then the dental lab will make the mouthguard over the model of the teeth using a special material.
